The Review

As a followup to my review of the Kelly Kettle Stainless Steel Scout a few weeks ago, I’ll be covering one of those “must have” accessories that is not included with most of the basic kits that they sell. It is called the Hobo Stove.

Kelly Kettle Hobo Stove 02The Kelly Kettle Hobo Stove is a rugged stainless steel adapter ring designed to enhance the functionality of the Kelly Kettle cook system. Primarily, the Hobo Stove is used to safely support pots and pans while cooking in the wild. Each Hobo Stove is 6.2 inches in diameter and provides nine points of support for enhanced stability.

Not only does the Hobo Stove act as a tall windscreen to support a fire in most weather conditions, the side of the stove ring has five air holes to allow plenty of oxygen into fire enhancing its efficiency while directing the heat upwards toward the cookware. On one side there is a large access hole on the side of the ring, perfect for easy access when adding material to the fire. Like the Kelly Kettle, the Hobo Stove can be used with any solid fuel available.

The Hobo Stove can be used with or without a Kelly Kettle Scout or Base Camp Firebase. However, when it is used in conjunction with the Firebase the fire is safely contained within the base so it can truly be used as “Leave No Trace” and “No Scorched Earth” solutions.

The Hobo Stove has a compact design that packs neatly and securely inside the Kelly Kettle Firebase so it doesn’t take up any additional space and at 6 ounces, it doesn’t add much weight to the cook system.

Final Thoughts

I love my Kelly Kettle, it boils water exceptionally well. Enter their new stainless steel Hobo Stove adapter ring. It turns the Kelly Kettle’s Firebase into a long-lasting campfire pit and stove capable of supporting large cast iron pots and pans as well. The Hobo Stove is an excellent addition to any survival kit and enhances the Kelly Kettle cook system in every way. I think the Hobo Stove should be an integral part of every Kelly Kettle cook system. Two thumbs way up!
