The Review

There are many reasons why people wear hats… Especially in the outdoors. They can help to keep you warm when it is cold and cool when it’s hot, and most of all, protect your head from the sun. Hats come in all shapes and sizes, and vary greatly in terms of quality. Today, I’ll be looking at the LTM6 MultiCam Airflo Hat from Tilley Endurables. It is a higher-end head covering with a guarantee to match, so let’s see what it’s all about…

Tilley Endurables LTM6 Airflo HatThe Tilley name has become synonymous with quality. All of their hats are made from high-quality materials in Canada and hand-sewn with lock-stitched seams to prevent them from unravelling. The LTM6 Airflo has a stylish appearance and weighs slightly less than 4 ounces. It is constructed primarily from their rugged proprietary nylon fabric called Nylamtium for its light-weight, high-strength and its superior water and mildew resistance, not to mention its resistance to fading. Nylamtium has also been certified to block 98% of all harmful UVA/UVB radiation, providing a UPF rating of 50+ which is the maximum protection rating given.

The LTM6 has a deep, downward sloping brim that is 3-1/2″ deep in the front and back, and 2-1/2″ deep at the sides providing exceptional sun protection and shelter from the elements. The brim has been reinforced with stitching across the entire surface to help keep its shape. Below the brim is an adjustable tethering system designed to keep the hat secure to your head in windy situations, and hidden underneath when they are not in use. The rear loop can be used to cinch the hat down behind the head in low to moderate winds, and the front loop can be used to further secure that hat below the chin in high-wind situations.

Tilley Endurables LTM6 Airflo HatThere is a 1-1/4″ Hydrofil anti-sweat band designed to wick perspiration away from your forehead for extra comfort, and a 3/4″-wide band of polyester mesh sitting just below the crown to provide improve air circulation and breathability.

There is a thin layer of closed-cell foam sewn into the crown of the hat providing some floatation to the hat. It is hidden inside a Velcro-secured pocket located on the under-side of the crown, just below the hat label. It is a perfect location for stowing some extra cash, or a license when you need to keep it safe. Inside the pocket, you’ll find a 4-page Owner’s Manual that describes the history of Tilley and some useful information about the hat. Printed on the label in both French and English are the detailed instructions for caring for the hat as well as the wonderful Tilly guarantee.

While their hats are low-maintenance, Tilly does encourage frequent washing of their hats to prevent skin oils and dirt from staining the fabric or causing it to decay. The LTM6 hat should be machine washed on delicate cycle in cool or warm water, or hand washed with a mild soap or shampoo, then reshaped and allowed to air-dry. If the hat shrinks, it can easily be stretched over your knee. The wrinkles can be removed by wetting and stretching. Their hats should never be bleached or placed in a dryer for any reason.

Tilley Endurables LTM6 Airflo HatMost Tilly hats are guaranteed for life not to mildew or wear-out. Any Tilley hat protected by their guarantee that has worn out (as long as it has not been bleached) will be replaced free charge with the exception of the shipping costs.

Additionally, most Tilley hats are insured against loss for a period of 2 years after you purchase them. Basically, if the hat is lost, stolen, or destroyed in any way, Tilly will replace the hat at 50% of the original cost. You can see their exceptional policy for yourself here.

Final Thoughts

I have worn more hats over the years than I could possibly count, but never a Tilley before this one. I was very impressed with the quality of the materials, and the workmanship is exceptional. From the moment that I first put it on my head, I knew this hat would be by far my favorite. It keeps the sun off my face, the rain off of my head, and the sweat off my brow. I love the Multicam pattern, but some of the other colors are pretty nice too.

The Tilley LTM6 Airflo hats are definitely not a cheap hats, but in my opinion they are worth every penny. After wearing this one for quite a while now, I would never willingly settle for less. Two thumbs up Tilley!
